Once you are done with your Taj Mahal sunrise tour, the next stop in our one day trip is Agra Fort. It was initially built as a military structure. Eventually, Shah Jahan transformed it into a palace.
Agra Fort is the other name of the very famous Red Fort or Lal Qila. It is situated on the right bank of the river Yamuna. It is one of the most important and deftly built heritage sites built by the Mughals.
Its splendour is enhanced by a number of highly decorated building that mirrors the imposing and splendid Mughal style of art and architecture. It was also constructed by the third Mughal emperor Akbar on the remains of the ancient lands of Badalgarh.
No trip to Agra can end without a visit to Agra Fort. It was built by Akbar. So brace yourself for some severe dose of Mughal resplendence. The fort is a house to quite a few other splendid palaces like Jahangir palace and Khas Mahal, audience hall like Diwan-i-Khas and two exquisite mosques.
Some of these are made of red sandstone and white marble. These were built by two generations including Jahangir and Shahjahan. It is pretty close to Taj Mahal as well. Many a time Taj Mahal’s beauty overshadows that of Agra Fort. But once you visit this place it will surely sweep you off your feet.
The fort is semi-circular and is surrounded on all sides by a 21.4 metre high wall. Double walls have been constructed here with thick circular bastions at regular intervals. It has four gates. One of them gates was named as “khizri-gate”. It faces the river. The fort has survived the ravages of time, nature and men. The fort covers an area of approximately 94 acres. Currently, the fort has more than two dozen monuments.
Records suggest that about 5000 buildings were built here in Bengali and Gujarati styles. Most of these buildings have ceased to exist now. Shah Jahan demolished some of these monuments, so to accommodate his white marble palaces. The British destroyed most of the buildings in order to raise barracks.
About 30 Mughal buildings are still standing strong on the southeastern side. Delhi-Gate, Akbari-Gate and the extremely famous ‘Bengali-Mahal’ are some of them. You’ll have to enter the compound via the Amar Singh Gate. This gate was meant to confuse the attackers. From there, a path leads to the Moti Masjid. You’ll also come across Diwan-i-Am which unlike the former is open to public.
A tiny staircase at the left of the Diwan-i-Am throne will lead you to a big courtyard. The tiny but exquisite Nagina Masjid (also known as Gem Mosque), built in 1635 by Shah Jahan for the royal ladies.

You’ll be picked up around 11 AM from Agra Fort and if interested you can plan to go on shopping.
